Tampa VA Specialty Treatment Expansion

CUSTOMER: Department of Veterans Affairs

James A. Haley VA Medical Center, Tampa, Florida

ADVON is proud to lead the Specialty Treatment Expansion at the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital in Tampa, Florida. As a flagship facility that opened in 1972, this hospital is a center of excellence—notably the only VA facility in the country to hold 11 rehabilitation programs accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

This mission-critical expansion directly supports the hospital’s specialized care units, including cardiology, spinal cord injury treatment, and comprehensive mental health services.

Advanced Medical Facility Expansion: The project features a 14,436 SF, two-story addition engineered to house high-acuity specialty treatment environments. This new wing is purpose-built to advance the hospital’s wound care and surgical capabilities, incorporating:

  • Surgical Suites: Two state-of-the-art specialty surgical procedure rooms and two minor procedure rooms.
  • Specialized Clinical Space: Two dedicated wound care rooms designed for complex treatment protocols.
  • Patient Care Continuum: Integrated recovery suites, follow-up consultation rooms, and modern medical administrative offices.

Technical Scope & Site Modernization: The expansion required a sophisticated “ground-up” approach within a high-traffic medical campus, involving:

  • Environmental Remediation: Precise demolition of existing structures paired with the rigorous abatement of hazardous materials to ensure a safe construction site.
  • Life Safety & Infrastructure: Comprehensive installation of new fire protection, high-grade medical plumbing, and advanced HVAC systems designed for sterile environments.
  • Electrical & Data Integration: Robust electrical power distribution and cutting-edge telecommunications systems to support modern medical imaging and electronic health records.
  • Architectural Integration: Seamlessly blending the new two-story structure with the existing hospital aesthetic while meeting modern building codes and healthcare standards.
